How to Handle and Prevent Getting Locked Out of Your Apartment

Getting locked out of your apartment home is common and easy to do.  These tips and tricks will help you prevent and overcome the lock-out.

Keep your spare key handy!  The best way to prevent the lock-out situation would be to keep a copy of your key in your car’s glove box, under a door mat, or if you trust your neighbor, give them a copy of your key.  This way you will have your back up on hand.  You can also keep a copy in your wallet or purse.  If the leasing office in your apartment community does not issue you a spare key, talk to them and see if they have a policy on issuing a second set.

If you do get locked out, here are some ways to overcome the situation.

Assess the situation.  Before going to drastic measures, think about what is inside of your apartment home.  Is the stove or oven on?  Are there small children or pets inside?

If it is during leasing office hours, walk down or call your apartment community’s leasing office and have them let you back in.  What if no one is there or it is outside of office hours?  All apartment communities, like the Apartments On Edgehill, have a 24-hour emergency maintenance hotline that can assist with any apartment emergency situation, including a lock out.

Always remain calm if you get locked out and then use our helpful tips!
